Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI or MT)
Magnetic Particle Inspection is a nondestructive testing method used for detecting surface and near surface flaws and defects. MPI is fast and relatively easy to apply, and surface preparation is not as critical as it is for other NDT methods. These characteristics make MPI one of the most widely utilized nondestructive testing methods. MPI uses magnetic fields and small magnetic particles similar to iron filings to detect flaws in components. The only real limitation is that the component being inspected must be made of a ferromagnetic material such as iron, nickel, cobalt, or one of their alloys. The method is used to inspect a variety of product forms including castings, forgings, and weldments. The structural steel, automotive, petrochemical, power generation, and aerospace industries are a few examples that utilize magnetic particle inspection. Underwater inspection is another area where magnetic particle inspection may be used to test items such as offshore structures and underwater pipelines.
This course requires no prior training or experience by the student in this method of NDT. The material is presented in a manner that promotes understanding and the ability to make immediate application. This is an excellent course for NDT trainees who must have Level I and II training in order to qualify for certification as well as facility personnel who are responsible for or oversee the application of testing or Quality Control/Quality Assurance.
Course Content
M2110 Magnetic Particle Inspection Level I and II.
This course provides accurate, current and thorough training that leads directly to the ability of the student to perform valid Magnetic Particle Testing. Level I and II material is combined and presented in a single classroom course. The course starts with the basic theory of magnetism and continues through its many applications for the testing of ferromagnetic materials. Ample time is allowed for technique demonstrations and hands-on lab exercises. Lecture notes, text book and necessary testing materials are provided.
M2112 Magnetic Particle Inspection Level IIa - AC Yoke Only.
This course provides specific training in the use of the AC Yoke for Magnetic Particle Testing. The information is presented in a single 2-day classroom course. The course starts with the basic theory of magnetism and continues through its many applications for the testing of ferromagnetic materials. Ample time is allowed for technique demonstrations and hands-on lab exercises. Lecture notes, text book and necessary testing materials are provided.

Alternative Course Options
M2111-WB Magnetic Particle Inspection Level I and II. Online Course
Online courses are ideally suited for Level II technicians that are in need of refresher training or for trainees that have other means of gaining hands-on experience. All online courses include the "body of knowledge" recommended by ASNT and includes a final exam that can be utilized as the method's General Examination.
Specific and Practical Evaluation exams are not included in the online course but can be scheduled for on-campus administration by one of our qualified instructors. Ask for "on-site" examination options if travel to our campus presents a problem.
