Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI or PT)
Liquid penetrant inspection is a nondestructive testing method that reveals surface breaking flaws by bleedout of a penetrating liquid colored with a visible or fluorescent dye from the flaw. The technique is based on the ability of a liquid to be drawn into a "clean" (in other words, unobstructed) surface breaking flaw by capillary action. After an appropriate period of time for penetration has papsed, called the "dwell time," excess penetrant on the surface is removed and a developer applied. The developer acts as a blotter and draws the penetrant from the flaw to reveal its presence. Penetrants with a visible dyed added (color contrast) require sufficient white light to insure proper inspection, while penetrants with a fluorescent dye added need to be used in darkened conditions with an ultraviolet or "black light". This method is used to inspect a variety of product forms including castings, forgings, and weldments. The structural steel, automotive, petrochemical, power generation, and aerospace industries are a few examples that utilize liquid penetrant inspection.
This course requires no prior training or experience by the student in this method of NDT. The material is presented in a manner that promotes understanding and the ability to make immediate application. This is an excellent course for NDT trainees who must have Level I and II training in order to qualify for certification as well as facility personnel who are responsible for or oversee the application of testing or Quality Control/Quality Assurance.
Course Content
P2210 Liquid Penetrant Inspection Level I and II.
This course provides accurate, current and thorough training that leads directly to the ability of the student to perform valid Liquid Penetrant Testing. Level I and II material is combined and presented in a single classroom course. The course starts with the history of this oldest method of nondestructive testing and continues on through topics such as safety, allowed cleaning methods, scope of application, proper use and calibration of media and equipment, and ends with an overview of the origin and nature of discontinuities. Ample time is allowed for technique demonstrations and hands-on lab exercises. Lecture notes, text book and necessary testing materials are provided.

The curriculum exceeds the content recommended by The American Society for Nondestructive Testing for Level I and II studies. Lesson-by-lesson quizzes monitor progress and all three evaluation examinations (General, Specific and Practical) are administered by a qualified ASNT ACCP Level III. The course also includes a Visual Acuity Test if needed by the student.

Alternative Course Options
Online courses are also available.
P2211-WB Liquid Penetrant Inspection Level I and II. Online Course
Online courses are ideally suited for Level II technicians that are in need of refresher training or for trainees that have other means of gaining hands-on experience. All online courses include the "body of knowledge" recommended by ASNT and includes a final exam that can be utilized as the method's General Examination.
Specific and Practical Evaluation exams are not included in the online course but can be scheduled for on-campus administration by one of our qualified instructors. Ask for "on-site" examination options if travel to our campus presents a problem.
P2215 PortableTechniques in Liquid Penetrant Inspection - Level IIA.
Because of the frequent need to use only a portable technique (Type I or II, Method C) in liquid penetrant inspection, we offer through request only, a special limited certification training course that is recognized by ASNT. The material covered is limited in scope compared to P2210, and consequently the course length is shorter as well. Depending upon the specific techniques employed, the training and testing can typically be tailored to your needs in a one and a half to two day time period. Call us for details if you think this option meets your needs.
